Mat Beck

Visual effects supervisor Mat Beck has over 30 years of experience working in film and television, and is so rigorous in his craft that he also holds membership in the American Society of Cinematographers. Since the late 1970s, Beck has worked his way through the visual effects (aka VFX) field with roles including electronic designer, camera operator, assistant director, visual effects producer and up to senior visual effects supervisor, a title he has held since 2007, when he served in the role for the disparate projects of "Rush Hour 3" and "Into the Wild." The entrepreneurial Beck has founded two effects companies over his career: Light Matters, Inc., in 1994, and Entity FX in 2002. Over the decades, his biggest contributions have come on the shows "The X-Files," where he served as visual effect producer on 99 episodes over a decade, and even scripted an episode; the Superman-based sci-fi drama "Smallville," where he contributed his visual effects expertise from 2002 to 2011, and directed one episode; and on the CW fantasy horror series "The Vampire Diaries," where he served as senior visua effects supervisor from 2009 to 2011. Beck has also worked on numerous big-name feature films, including everything from "Titanic" in 1997, "Spider-Man 2" in 2004, and "Miami Vice" in 2006--though his bread-and-butter gigs continue to be television shows.
