French teenager Georges "Jojo" Castagnier (Jean-Pierre Leaud) runs away from home and finds a shabby room for rent in the Quartier Pigalle section of Paris. During his stay, he gets to know his neighbors, including Dicky (Pierre Mondy), a failing boxer who is sleeping with Jojo's dream girl. Eventually, Jojo meets the sweet Marietta (Monique Brienne), a more attainable young woman. However, his romance is interrupted by his dire lack of funds, which could land him in serious trouble.
