The Past is the story of fundamentally decent people haunted by their bad decisions. As with real life, The Past offers no easy answers or neat resolutions. But as Farhadi masterfully peels back the layers of deception at the heart of this story, we’re left hoping that The Past’s aching characters can find their footing and a measure of peace. The Past was in competition at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, where Bejo won the award for Best Actress for her performance and the film won the festival’s Prize of the Ecumenical Jury.
