Jonathan Hardy

New Zealander Jonathan Hardy has cobbled together an odd career as a character actor and sometimes writer/director, working with some of the biggest names of Australian film. He was first seen internationally when he played Max's police commander in the 1979 international action hit, "Mad Max." He performed in the wartime drama "Breaker Morant" on the Australian stage and collaborated on the screenplay of the 1980 film version. Directed by Bruce Beresford, "Breaker Morant"'s script was nominated for an Academy Award in 1981. He has one director's credit to his name: "Backstage," an Australian-shot starring vehicle for American singer Laura Branigan. His earthiness helped him land small parts in varied projects, including a role as a priest in the 1996 TV movie "The Thorn Birds: The Missing Years." He was part of the dazzling atmosphere in Baz Luhrmann's 2001 musical, "Moulin Rouge!," playing the Man In The Moon. Capping off this unusual collection of credits is his best known work, supplying the voice for Dominar Rygel XVI, the egocentric alien (portrayed by a puppet) in the 1999 sci-fi series "Farscape."
