Two rival villages struggle for survival in the woods of mediaeval Russia. Draha succeeds in saving the life of an unconscious stranger, inducing rage from a scheming and powerful sorcerer. The fearless Avar tribe threaten their very existence.
While facing the collective rage of the villagers riled up by Carad, Draha manages to revive the mysterious stranger who has lost all recollection of his past. Raduz has crowned himself king and enacted a rule of terror from which few may escape.
The gord finds the stranger guilty of a girl's murder. His fate is left in the hands of the gods as Carad plots his death. At Farnau, Raduz's hopes of engendering an heir seem closer than ever, as well as new threats from within his kingdom.
Following the release of Vlad, Belo discovers an ancient relic that summons memories within the stranger's mind. Lada's plot, together with Carad's, begins to unravel as the tension of political intrigue takes over both gords.
Avar invaders finally arrive at the outskirts of Great Table. Vlad's true identity as a warrior takes over and he turns against the gord's corrupt elites. At Farnau, Carad's sorcery backfires and Lada's fate hangs on a thread.
An old friend from the past helps Lada in a moment of despair, leading to her meet with Belo. Vlad gains recognition among the villagers of Great Table as a hero and suspicions rise against the gord's true enemy: Carad.
