Discovering the World

Edo was the name of Japan's capital in the days of the shoguns and dictatorships, a city now known as Tokyo. In the 1800's, Edo was the world's largest city. Today, the sprawling megalopolis of this "Capital of the East" is an infinite juxtaposition of districts, where the future and past coexist.

Almost everything is an excuse to celebrate in Ibiza; Ibizans celebrate on the beach, on boats, and in villas; locals also celebrate traditional feasts in their villages.

This is Hong Kong, a city whose ambition is to set a new benchmark for Asia. Laser beams shoot skywards, accentuating the angles of skyscrapers set in neon. Over the bay, the heavy sails of a junk-boat reflect flashes of color, while streaks of light glisten in the wake of the Star ferry.

It is impossible to understand the soul of Minorca without having witnessed the festivals of Saint Juan and tasted the famous pomada, the alcohol-laced lemonade served generously throughout the festivities. That, at least, is what the locals met by Pierre Brouwers claim, as he scoured an island dotted with outstanding prehistoric sites, edged by sheer cliffs and blessed with irresistible charm. The film traces the portrait of the most appealing of the Balearic Islands.

Majorca is the largest of the Balearic islands. The sun and the variety of landscapes attract visitors in millions. But the island has always fascinated the world's artists. Some of the most famous names have actually lived here after having fallen under its spell. The documentary by Pierre Brouwers outlines the path to understanding why the likes of Miró, Picasso, Dali, Chopin, George Sand and many others found this island irresistible.
