Accident investigator Marita Kaila arrives in a small town devastated by tragedy: a train derailment, an explosion in the rail yard, and a burned-down station have left over sixty dead. Now, she must uncover what went wrong.

The local hospital is overwhelmed, filled with victims of the disaster and their loved ones. Among those fighting for their lives is the operator of the derailed train.

Marita and Daniel question the train operator, who becomes agitated when asked about the automatic control system—a Finnish innovation soon to launch EU-wide. But what if the Futurail system, hailed as the future, is dangerously flawed?

Eero finds no issues in the Futurail system. But Marita never trusted him—and trusts him even less after learning he once dated one of the system’s coders. Could Eero be protecting his ex-girlfriend?

The investigative team has narrowed the possible causes of the disaster to two theories: a flaw in the Futurail system or a fire at the train station. Every detail now brings them closer to uncovering the truth.

The schizophrenic suspect is taken into custody, but Marita suspects she’s just a scapegoat. Meanwhile, Daniel discovers that the train operator had learned how to bypass the dead man’s switch, meant to detect alertness.
