A woman is murdered after receiving a series of threatening letters, leading to a chain of murders that DCI Barnaby must investigate.

Simon is back and tells Peter that he's ready to start work. Peter has to sort out a sponsorship dispute between the local sex shop and the cricket team - then he knocks team captain Nigel Pearson down while riding Lyle's bike. Meanwhile, Simon is having a passionate affair with a mystery blonde who turns out to be Nigel's wife, and Lyle is called upon to represent a lady who refuses to pay her council tax.
