Star embarks on a quest for music stardom in Atlanta with her friend, Alexandra, and sister, Simone. Together they begin to understand what it takes to make it in the music industry and find some much needed help.

The trio work on a demo for a chance to perform at a festival gig. Their producer, Roland, has concealed a difficult secret with his wife while the group's guiding mother figure, Carlotta, clashes with their struggling agent, Jahil.

Someone close to Carlotta is in danger, bringing out her protective nature; Jahil tries to raise money for a recording session; Simone's past haunts her.

Carlotta continues to pursue the truth about Simone and Star's past; a familiar face seeks Jahil's help; Miss Bruce prepares the salon for an upcoming hair show; Gladys Knight is arranged to introduce their showcase.

After getting a glimpse of their local competition, tensions rise between the three girls as they work on revamping their style.

When Star, Simone and Alex are invited to perform at an upscale charity event, Jahil puts Alex in the lead and strongly encourages Star to ditch Hunter.
