Aspiring actress Ann lands herself a job in a TV advertisement, where she encounters Donald, a magazine writer.

Just as Ann arrives in New York and learns of her first acting assignment, her mother shares some bad news for her.

After agreeing to babysit for her neighbour, unfortunate circumstances force Ann to bring her charge along to an audition.

While borrowing Donald's car to move a plant, a sewing machine salesman hits the car, which leads to a lawsuit.

Ann convinces Don to accompany her to Brewster to pick up her old hi-fi system. On the way, they stop for a picnic that soon turns disastrous.

Ann encounters a rich young man while paying a parking ticket, who proceeds to try to charm her, which leave Don feeling jealous.
