Writer Harry Quebert finds himself at the centre of a murder investigation, when he is accused of killing a young girl. His former student Marcus pays him a visit in order to try and help.

Marcus begins to look into Harry's possible involvement in the Nola Kellergan case. While doing so, he receives threats from an unknown source that warn him against prying.

Harry becomes further incriminated in the death of Nola as evidence builds. Harry remembers how he tried to distance himself from Nola in the past, and Marcus decides to write a book about the case.

Marcus decides to pursue a lead that links Nola to an influential community member. As the investigation continues, more details about Nola's struggles at home are brought to light.

Marcus investigates a possible link between Nola and the influential Elijah Stern. Harry remembers a trip away with Nola, that in retrospect, was ill-advised.

Marcus and Perry receive testimony that casts Nola in a new light, leading to an explosive reaction from Harry.
