The School of Five Venoms is notorious among martial artists for the evil deeds of its disciples. The master of the school, Huang Yen, retired from the martial arts world several years earlier. Before he dies, he feels so guilty about all the evil deeds associated with the school that he orders his youngest disciple, Yang Te (Chiang Sheng), to stop other disciples from carrying on with their wicked ways, eliminating them if necessary. Five disciples of the Five Venoms are still active in the martial arts world, each of them excelling in a special kind of kung fu named after a venomous animal. These five disciples are Tang (Lu Feng) who represents the Centipede, Hung (Wei Pei) the Snake, Ma (Sun Chien) the Scorpion, Ho (Kuo Chue) the Lizard, and Li (Lo Meng) the Toad. These five disciples from the school never reveal their real identities and they do not all know each other. To carry out his mission, Yang Te must first find all five, even though he has never met them nor knows their real names. Yang Te was told by Master Huang before his death that he may be able to find the five disciples through Yuan, a former classmate of the master who is hoarding some treasure that belongs to the school. The master predicted that the five disciples would be after Yuan and the treasure. Two of the disciples, Ma and Ho, have become constables, and another, Hung, is a rich celebrity in town. Hung joins Tang the Centipede in forcing Yuan to hand over the treasure. When Yuan refuses to do so, they kill him and his whole family. When Ma arrives at the scene, he accidentally finds the map which shows where the treasure is hidden. When Yang Te arrives in town, he picks up clues suggesting that Tang might be Yuan's killer and reports it to constable Ho. With the help of Ma's friend Li, the two constables Ma and Ho arrest Tang. Through their kung-fu styles, Yang recognizes Tang as the first disciple Centipede, and Li the fifth disciple the Toad. Ma is actually in league with Hung and Tang to rob Yuan of the hidden treasure. So Ma and Hung bribe the judge and the trial for Tang is put off. Meanwhile, they try to frame Li as the real murderer. Li resists when Ma tries to arrest him, so that Ma has to use his secret weapon, the "Scorpion Darts", thus exposing his identity as the third disciple of the School of the Five Venoms. The observant Yang Te by this time realizes that Tang, Hung, Ma, Ho and Li are the five disciples he is seeking. Since Li is dead, and Ho is the only righteous one among the remaining four, Yang teams up with Ho and eventually gets rid of Tang, Hung and Ma, thereby accomplishing his mission.
