Helle is assigned to investigate the killing of a young man; special investigators Dreyer and Jacobi arrive from out of town, and make it clear that they require no further help; Helle and Dreyer are made partners.

Dreyer orders an excavation of the area where Tyra was found when he suspects some details at the scene of the crime may have been overlooked; skeletons are uncovered and the outlines of a mysterious mass grave arise.

Helle continues on her own after she is forced to withdraw from the police investigation; Dreyer's unstable behavior makes him a loose cannon; Ed doubts his ability to solve the murders.

Helle and Dreyer fear their chances of finding Jani alive are slim; Dreyer realizes he needs Helle's help when she makes progress in her private investigation.

Helle and Dreyer uncover clues about a pre-Christian religion that used to be widespread in the area, and learn that Jani and Tyra were curious about the faith.

Helle is hailed as a hero for rescuing Jani and solving the old murders, but remains haunted by guilt; the investigation into Tyra's murder continues.
