S1, E1: Bolzano, northern Italy. Pierre Manzano speeds around the curves of a mountain road in his vintage Alfa Romeo, heading towards the city center. Suddenly, the streetlights go out, along with the traffic lights. Everything goes pitch black. Out of the corner of his eye, Manzano sees a truck hurtling towards him; the collision throws his head against the side window, which shatters as the car flips over. The city is in absolute darkness – BLACKOUT. Everyone assumes the power cut will soon be over but Manzano – a former hacker – discovers that the smart meters in his apartment building are being controlled remotely. Realizing that this isn’t any normal power cut, he sets off to warn the power company. In Berlin, the authorities have not appreciated the severity of the situation. Public transport, water and telecommunications have all been knocked out. The internet is offline. Thousands of people around the country are stuck in elevators and subway trains. Emergency vehicles across the country are out of action; and gas stations can’t function. Frauke has another problem: as the power failed, her 8-year-old twins Lisa and Marie were on a train headed for Berlin. Frauke races to the main station but the train never arrived, and panic is setting in.
