In 1976, after receiving a mysterious call, Hans Knoop begins to investigate wealthy entrepreneur Pieter Menten and his art collection.

Hans Knoop pays another visit to Piet van Apeldoorn, the officer who had once arrested Menten; Knoop gets a lead about Menten's supposedly dead brother who may be alive.

Knoop locates Menten's brother and pleads with him to divulge dark secrets about his sibling; Menten evades arrest, and soon an international hunt is under way.
