Jim tries to convince his friend Danny (Dan Aykroyd) not to back out on his wedding plans with Laraine (Laraine Newman).

Cheryl lies to her cousin Mindy and claims she is the singer of Jim's band. Mindy then invites her to perform at her engagement party, so they have to try to get Cheryl out of the band as soon as possible.

Cheryl wants to go to the opera after a long time, but is rebuffed by Jim, a culture vulture. Instead, he introduces his wife to an elderly widower, a big opera fan, so they can go together.
