Sujin, a bird watcher and person who would classify herself as fair, starts work at a primary school as a temporary teacher. There, is a small student, Hye-na, that catches her eye. Sujin visits Hye-na's home and fears what she sees.

Sujin is desperate to remove Hye-na from the situation of abuse, and plans to pretend Hye-na has drowned in order to remove her from the country. However, her plans prove difficult with the police on her tail.

The police investigate a CCTV footage and Sujin hides Hye-na at an orphanage where Sujin was raised. Not long after, there are TV broadcasts of Hye-na's mother which upsets Hye-na. Sujin gives her a choice to return home.

Sujin visits her mother in desperate need for money but is provided with the condition that Sujin spend time with her. Sujin leaves Hye-na with the barber shop lady in order to do so.

Whilst Seol-ak hides from the police, he finds evidence of Sujin and tracks her. Sujin's mother is in need of chemotherapy, and Sujin is reluctant to leave her behind in order to leave with Hye-na.

Sujin finds her maternal mother Hong-hee, and questions why she abandoned her. Sujin finds the reason unacceptable and is distressed. Seol-ak becomes aware of Hye-na's abduction by Sujin and tracks her.
