The Ainsworth family are the proprietors of a fine hotel on the magical post-war Italian Riviera. The hotel has only been open a few weeks, but already the problems are mounting for its co-proprietor and moving spirit, Bella Ainsworth.

Danioni worms his way into the Ainsworth’s affairs, helping Cecil arrange for a family heirloom to be sent from England, while turning the screw on Bella with his blackmail threats, and setting loose his Fascist thugs.

The younger inhabitants of the hotel find ways to let their hair down, while Cecil and Jack shake on a shady deal for the sale of the Ainsworth family heirloom.

Bella finally stands up to Signor Danioni, who hands over compromising correspondence to her husband, but before Cecil can confront her, the Ainsworth family heirloom goes missing.

As the local police search the Hotel for the missing heirloom and various guests and employees come under suspicion, Cecil finally confronts Bella over her compromising letter.
