Fifteen months after solving the cold case murder of his mother Marjorie Lowe, and suffering the loss of his ex-wife, Eleanor, things look grim for Detective Harry Bosch. Strung-out and dirty, Bosch steps off a plane in the middle of nowhere.

Bosch struggles to manage all the things he has lost and to keep the darkness at bay. The task force bears down on two suspects, and acting captain Grace Billets gets tangled in station politics and petty opposition.

Billets arrives at the scene of Pierce and Vega's discovery, and as Pierce debriefs, Vega finds something even more unsettling inside a secret room. Packing for college, Maddie confesses to her father that she leaked Henry's memo to Chandler.

Edgar runs a sting on his dirty cops, Maddie starts a new internship, and Chief Irvin Irving jump-starts his mayoral campaign.
