An impressive blend of coming-of-age drama and comic book action, "Chronicle" impressed critics and audiences alike with an array of visual effects produced for a fraction of the cost incurred by studio superhero efforts. In February 2012, the picture debuted at the top of the box office its opening weekend, earning an estimated $8.65 million. As a result of its success, Trank became one of the youngest directors in film history to score a No. 1 hit with a feature film, which placed him in the company of such established filmmakers as Steven Spielberg and James Cameron. He was soon attached to a number of high-profile features, including film versions of the popular video game "Shadow of the Colossus" (Playstation 2, 2005) and the comic book series "The Red Star" (1994-2004, 2006-). In 2012, Trank was confirmed as writer and director of a reboot of "Fantastic Four" scheduled for 2015. In June 2014, Trank was announced as the director of a stand-alone film in the "Star Wars" (1977) universe. However, Trank exited the project in May 2015, saying in his official statement, "I'm making a personal decision to move forward on a different path. I've put a tremendous amount of thought into this, and I know deep down in my heart that I want to pursue some original creative opportunities. That said, the Star Wars universe has always been one of my biggest influences, and I couldn't be more excited to witness its future alongside my millions of fellow Star Wars fans." The announcement came amidst rumors that Lucasfilm had grown concerned about reports of Trank's difficult behavior during the "Fantastic Four" shooting. When "Fantastic Four" opened to poor reviews and middling box office in August 2015, Trank composed (and subsequently deleted) a tweet that blamed studio interference for the film's faults.
