Sigourney Weaver

Susan Alexandra "Sigourney" Weaver is an American actress. An influential figure in science fiction and popular culture, Weaver was voted Number 20 in Channel 4's countdown of the 100 Greatest Movie Stars of All Time, being one of only two women in the Top 20. Weaver rose to fame for playing Ellen Ripley in the Alien franchise, who is regarded as a significant female protagonist in cinema history. Her performance in the series have earned the actress several accolades: for her performance in the first installment, she received a nomination for the British Academy Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer; for her performance in the second installment, she received nominations for the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Actress. Weaver's roles in the films Gorillas in the Mist (1988), Working Girl (1988) and The Ice Storm (1997) earned her further acclaim; the former pair won her two Golden Globe Awards, becoming the first actress to win two acting Golden Globes in the same year, and the latter won her a British Academy Film Award. She was additionally praised for her work in the Broadway play Hurlyburly (1984), which earned her a Tony Award nomination. Weaver's other film roles include Ghostbusters (1984), Ghostbusters II (1989), Dave (1993), Death and the Maiden (1994), Copycat (1995), Galaxy Quest (1999), Holes (2003), WALL-E (2008), Avatar (2009), Prayers for Bobby (2009), Paul (2011), The Cabin in the Woods (2012), and A Monster Calls (2016); and the television miniseries Political Animals (2012) and The Defenders (2017).
