Eric L. Haney
Eric L. Haney (now a retired command sergeant major) had barely graduated from Pepperell High School in his hometown of Lindale, Georgia when he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1970. Haney is a career military man whose published memoirs directly led to his second career as a writer and producer for film and television. The reason has to do with the counterterrorist unit he commanded: the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (or The Delta Force, as it is better-known). After writing his '02 book, "Inside Delta Force," Haney drew the attention of Hollywood producers keen to have his insights and attention to detail in their recreations of battle and counter-insurgency. In '03, playwright, director, and producer David Mamet hired Haney as a military and technical advisor on "Spartan," his 2004 feature film, starring actor Val Kilmer. Mamet had read "Inside Delta Force" and next went about finding a way to transform it into a television series centered on the daily challenges of the Delta Force. Mamet and "The Shield" creator Shawn Ryan enlisted Haney as a writer and co-producer for the Emmy-nominated CBS drama series "The Unit," starring Dennis Haysbert and Regina Taylor, which debuted in '05 and ran until '09. Haney has also appeared on camera--he was the host of the "Spymaster: U.S.A." series in '04, and he played a sergeant on "The Unit," a general in "Iron Man 2," and a colonel on the Fox series "Lie To Me" ('10).
