Episode 5

S1, E5: 1899 - bankrupt after gambling losses Dartie steals Winifred's pearls, and threatens to shoot her when confronted. He leaves. She starts divorce proceedings. Soames is lonely and bitter about the past, and wants an heir. Frenchwoman Annette would make him a suitable wife, but first he must divorce Irene. He visits 'Young' Jolyon, taking his nephew Val Dartie with him. Val and Holly are instantly attracted. Soames visits Irene and tries to force her to return. Terrified she flees to Paris, Jolyon visits and they fall in love. Soames hires a private investigator to follow Irene. Jolly and Val enlist to go and fight in the Boer war, meanwhile Dartie returns.
