Constable Mueller finds evidence that Huck is with them and organizes a search. Soon the boys see the ferry. A small cannon is fired at intervals, a superstition that this will make bodies rise to the surface. The boys realise they are believed drowned and have pangs of conscience. That night Tom leaves a note on bark and starts swimming ashore.
