Why Do Diamonds Cost So Much?

T1, E3: Diamonds might be forever, but it wasn’t forever ago that diamonds were so rare, they were mostly owned by royalty! So when and why did diamonds become available to everyone, and if there’s enough of them to go around, why are they SO freaking expensive?
