Becoming a Queen

In her last ever performance, Joella Crichton aims to win a historic tenth Queen of the Bands Competition in Toronto’s world renown Caribbean Carnival. From design to assemble, this film follows the exhaustive preparations for Joella, her costume designer Kenney Coombs and the tight knit team consisting of her mother, Lou-Ann and older sister, Mischka. Tensions build among the team, and stress rises for Joella as she worries over the design of the costume ahead of the nearing Competition. All the while, younger competitors are hungry for the title.A tenth win would forever solidify her legacy in the Caribbean-Canadian community. Joella dreams of leveraging this legacy to be viewed as an ambassador for Caribbean Carnival, educating youth and the larger society on its significance so that the vibrant event is seen as the fine art that it truly is.
