George (Clive Brook), 10th Duke of Bristol, has spent his money on women. His friend Richard Halton (Roland Culver), a fellow member of the British aristocracy, is also strapped for cash. While their poverty hinders their ability to court their elite female counterparts, the men nonetheless throw soirées for these ladies. One being the American Helen Hale (Googie Withers) who is in love with an oblivious George. Meanwhile, Richard is fond of the widowed Maria Wislack (Beatrice Lillie), but he refuses to tell her due to his financial inadequacy. Becoming disenchanted with his lack of romantic reciprocation, Maria takes it upon herself to invite Richard to Scotland, where they can get to know each other better. Inconveniencing the couple is George, who tags along, and the three are later joined by Helen. In such close quarters, they discover they might have miscalculated each other.
