The steelpan (steel drum) is the only acoustic instrument invented in the 20th century, which paralleled Trinidad & Tobago's history of colonization and the demand for independence. The first half of this two-part documentary highlights the musical precursors of the steelpan and the creation of the instrument on the twin island until it gained international recognition in Britain in 1951.
