Don Rafael Brull (Ricardo Cortez), the son of a wealthy land baron, falls in love with Leonara (Greta Garbo), the daughter of one of his father’s tenants. Rafael’s family has big aspirations for him, so his mother Doña Bernarda (Martha Mattox) breaks up the relationship forcing Leonara to move to Paris where she becomes an opera singer. Years later she returns to her hometown and their love reignites, threatening Rafael’s engagement and political career.
