Chiquis Rivera

American singer, songwriter, and author Chiquis Rivera is the eldest daughter of the late banda legend Jenni Rivera. Her stylistic mix crosses regional Mexican genres and modern pop. She was born in Los Angeles. In the limelight since she was a teen, she starred in her mother's reality show, <I>Jenni Rivera Presents: Chiquis & Raq-C, and regularly appeared in its spinoff, <I>I Love Jenni. After her mother was killed in a plane crash in late 2012, Chiquis undertook a singing career in her late twenties, singing "Esa No Soy Yo" in 2014, during Univision's televised tribute to her mother. She subsequently signed a record deal with Sony Music Latin. She wrote her debut single, "Paloma Blanca," when she was 29 years old and dedicated it to her mother. She was nominated for Univision's Lo Nuestro Award in 2015 (her mother won it). Chiquis undertook vocal studies with singer and songwriter Julio Reyes and began recording her debut full-length album. Rivera was not on good terms with her mother when she was killed. She addressed it exhaustively in her memoir <I>Forgiveness (titled <I>Perdon in the Spanish edition). It was published in April of 2015. Rivera's album Ahora listed her as executive producer. She wrote or co-wrote ten of its 14 songs in both English and Spanish. Released on June 2, 2015, it entered the charts at number one. It was the first album by a female Latin artist to do so since 2013, when her mother's posthumous compilation, 1 Vida, 3 Historias, was issued. Touring and television appearances managed to claim most of the next year-and-a-half, though the charting single "La Necia" appeared during that time. In April of 2017, she issued the pre-release single and video "Horas Extras," followed by the hotly anticipated full-length Entre Botellas in November. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi
