Monica hopes that the song, which describes the horrendous lynchings that took place in the South, as well as photography of lynchings from a traveling exhibit, will somehow have an effect on Charnelle. After Charnelle hears the story, she discovers an unlikely link between her immediate family and the tragedies that occurred in the South and is forced to choose between the drugs and her prospects for the future.
