A millionaire sets up a bomb in his boat to fake his death. Barnaby is contacted by the girlfriend of his boat "captain" to investigate what happened. Small clues like hand-tied flies, a cat boarded at a vet's, and an apple slicer bring Barnaby to a confrontation with a killer.

Dr. Death gets off on the wrong foot with the new equipment manager, who appears to know more than he lets on. Subsequently, Zagreb begins falling for a woman he believes to be a prostitute. Both find themselves in over their heads as their situations continue with them knowing little to nothing about their counterparts, and face little help in deciphering their respective situations.
