The discovery of a man and woman stabbed during a seemingly romantic park rendezvous leaves Detectives Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Stabler (Christopher Meloni) with the gruesome job of identifying the victims -- a difficult task as the woman's head and hands are missing. However, when further analysis of the park reveals that the crime scene was staged, the detectives focus their investigation on the female victim and her career as a Manhattan Federation for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals officer, which leads them to a variety of associates on both sides of the animal rights issue.

A woman is found murdered in a secluded area of Manhattan, her body outside of her car. Olivia and Fin work the case together and discover the victim worked for a biotech firm and was selling counterfeit drugs. The evidence trail points to the co-worker the victim was having an affair with, who was also her partner in the counterfeit drug scheme. That is, until another woman is found in the same circumstances in roughly the same place as the first victim.

A woman is killed after her SUV is carjacked, and when Briscoe and Green finally locate the vehicle, there's a vial of SARS in the back. They find the killer, a young black man who signs a confession, knowing there's enough evidence against him to make his case almost hopeless. His victim, Anna Hopkins, worked for world-renowned biochemist/virologist Dr. Charles Blanchard, and he claims he knew nothing about the traveling SARS vial. But Anna's friend Kate tells a different story. She reveals to the cops that Anna would do anything Dr. Blanchard asked her to. Coincidentally, a SARS epidemic breaks out and the doctors at St. Mark's Hospital isolate "patient zero," a journalist named Janine Wilson, who just returned from a conference on infectious diseases in Toronto.
