Personal grievances get in the way of detective Harry Trumble's retirement party. Trumble never forgave Dr. Sloan for marrying his college sweetheart and dedicated his life to his work. But even that is a bittersweet memory for Trumble as fifteen years on the Clown Killer task force leads to a dead end. So, when the police find a dead woman donning a clown-painted face Trumble forges a note from the clown killer indicating his resurgence. Dr. Sloan and Steve arrest the real suspect and are on to their colleague's scheme, but are forced to assist Trumble on this case since the Captain re-instated him as head of the task force.

While Wyler uncovers more connections between the various players involved in the Van Allan murder, Rickey Latrell is arrested and charged with murder.
