Detective Briscoe (Jerry Orbach) and his new partner, Detective Reynaldo Curtis (Benjamin Bratt, Pinero) investigate the death of a young girl who was abducted on her way to piano lessons. They apprehend a suspect, but when the victim's distraught mother shoots and kills him at the arraignment, ADAs McCoy (Sam Waterston) and Kincaid (Jill Hennessy) look into whether or not the mother and suspect were actually partners in crime.

Famed attorney William M. Kunstler (guest starring as himself) is hired to defend a female political activist (guest star Mary Joan Negro) who went underground 20 years ago to avoid murder charges.

Detective Harris is seething after having been shot at by two uniformed policemen; Wojo arrests a beggar who has a wife -- plus a house, a family and a maid.
