Midwesterner Matthew John Armstrong is not afraid to take on characters with issues. His most popular television roles have been characters battling difficult afflictions including supernatural abilities and substance abuse. His first role as a series regular came in 1999 with his acting debut in "Turks." Shot in his native Chicago, Armstrong stars as Joey Turk, a police sergeant, husband, and father, with the show revolving around his family life and personal struggles. Armstrong then joined the cast of the hit show "American Dreams," which ran from 2002 to 2005. Armstrong played Pete Pryor ,a member of the series' central family, living in Philadelphia during the 1960s. Pete is the younger brother of the family patriarch, Jack, and a police officer who is also an alcoholic and gambling addict. He then moved into the science fiction realm, and from 2006 to 2007, Armstrong played the role of Ted Sprague in eight episodes of the popular sci-fi drama "Heroes" about seemingly ordinary people who have extraordinary abilities. His character was able to emit radiation from his own body, and as a result is capable of destroying everyone and everything around him. He has continued to land roles on hit series including "The Mentalist" and the soap opera "The Young and the Restless."
