When his stepbrother is found dead, a man is charged with murder and is accused of using his sleepwalking as a cover-up.

Four sisters, headed by Hannah Haley, are found huddled around their broken-down show wagon as trail boss Gil Favor and his ramrod, Rowdy Yates, drive their cattle north to market.

In their remote, isolated mountain cabin, Walt and Freda Hollis find an injured man -- fever-ridden, hungry, armed with a gun. While Freda tries to make the stranger more comfortable, Walt reports the situation to the nearby ranger station. The ranger radios the Highway patrol, learns the man is Mickey Demarest -- a frightened young hoodlum who is running away from a murder he did not commit.

Rowdy Yates performs an act of bravery by rescuing a runaway horse while waiting in town to pick up mail for the cattle drive. The act is witnessed by rancher Luisa Hadley who schemes to lure Rowdy to the Hadley ranch to "break" a wild black stallion that has killed every man who has attempted to ride him and has crippled her daughter. Rowdy discovers Luisa's strange obsession when he is forced to ride the horse during a Spanish celebration known as the Day of the Dead.

Joe Quince tries running Jan and Woody Larkin out of town. Joe wants the store they inherited from their father, but they won't sell. In the midst of this danger, Bat Masterson agrees to teach Woody how to handle a gun.

A gang coerces a woman into courting Earp to learn information about a gold shipment they plan to rob, but Bat and Mayor Kelley see through the ruse.
