The surgical staff tries to be optimistic as a young woman clings to life after a brutal attack; Meredith puts her career on the line to save a newborn in the hospital nursery; the other interns learn that it takes more than just medical knowledge to be good at their jobs.

When an Asian-American stripper is found strangled, Detectives Briscoe (Jerry Orbach) and Green (Jesse L. Martin) discover that the victim was also operating a brothel that forced illegal Chinese immigrant women into sex slaves -- and they are further saddened to see two fellow detectives (guest stars Paul Regina and Mark Giordano) who were coerced into aiding her. As their trail narrows, they venture into cyberspace to check out an unlikely suspect - a phantom computer hacker known as "Hotrod." Sam Waterston, Angie Harmon, Steven Hill and S. Epatha Merkerson also star.
