Fielder (Ned Beatty), head of a huge conglomerate, Financial Dynamics, Inc., warns Rockford that the "kidnapping" of his top aide never occurred and for Rockford to quit prying. Rockford's interest heightens, however, when Doris Parker (Sharon Spelman) hires him to investigate the "accidental" death of her husband, a former FDI executive.

Doris, widow of an executive in Financial Dynamics, Inc., headed by Fielder (Ned Beatty), is convinced that a prior burglary and slaying of the print shop owner is tied in with Fielder and the "accidental" death of her husband.

Angie, a bookkeeper, hires Rockford to find her missing brother, a stock broker who also is being sought by Federal agents. While Angie is convinced her brother, Tom Perris, was abducted from a phone booth by the underworld, Rockford discovers other possibilities. He soon finds he is in the middle of Federal Agent Shore's investigation of the homicide death of an agent working with Perris. Rockford's probe is hampered both by the underworld and the law as he infiltrates the brokerage firm, headed by Sherm Whitlaw.

Rockford ends up in a deadly game of blackmail when he tries to clear a drunken driver who was framed for a homicide.

Barnaby suspects foul play following the accidental deaths of a judge and a doctor, who both received alleged phone calls just prior to their demise from a dead woman whom they both helped put into a mental institution years before.
