Smith and Romack follow a trail of bodies to Leadville in pursuit of a muderous bank robber and the gang that broke him out of jail.

Steve Stankey, a gunman about thirty, holds up a gas station, and while making his getaway in a taxi, shoots and kills a Highway Patrolman. He commandeers a Jaguar and drives it until it runs out of gas. He holds up in a neighboring farmhouse holding the farmer and his wife captive.

Bill and Julie Gibson stage a series of ingenious truck robberies. They follow a drug company's truck, wait for the driver to stop, then slip him a "mickey". Later, the driver gets drowsy, pulls off the road and the Gibsons easily plunder the truck and escape. Dan Mathews tries an ingenious ruse, risking his own life to capture the thieves red-handed.

When racketeers murder his brother Joe, Mike Richards hunts the killers without the help of the Highway Patrol. Chief Mathews springs to action to save the foolhardy "amateur detective".
