La Rue Collins is a masseuse, a gambler, a "steerer" for a high-priced brothel, and one of Pepper's best snitches. When the crime world finally catches on to her, La Rue has no one to turn to but the police. Unfortunately, Bill Crowley doesn't know who she is and turns her away. Pepper tries to find the frightened girl who needs money to return to her mother and young son in Arkansas. Pepper and Crowley, aided by Styles and Royster, follow La Rue's trail to her former boyfriend Donny, to her sympathetic landlady and on to a gambling parlour. The police always arrive too late, finding that Marco and Saylor, the gunmen also hunting La Rue, had been there first. Mrs. Fontaine, La Rue's brothel madam, gives the desperate girl $120 due to her and La Rue heads for the bus depot with a gift for her son. However, Saylor and Marco are there to gun her down. Pepper and Crowley arrive too late, but Pepper is able to promise the dying La Rue she will send the present on.
