Incident of the Peddler
A friendly peddler's ability to bargain saves Gil Favors men from attack by a tribe of hungry Cheyennes. Gil Favor's drovers strike it lucky when they befriend peddler Mendel Sorkin who is trying -- unsuccessfully -- to drive a small bony herd of cattle. Sorkin, who has saved a sizable sum of money to take him home to Holland, joins Favors drive and puts up $1500 when Favor, to meet his payroll, tries to negotiate an advance payment from a cattle buyer and is offered a ridiculous sum. The peddler's plea to make a slight detour in the drive saves the drovers from getting involved in a settler's war. And when some hungry Cheyennes threaten to attack the drovers unless the Indians are given 1000 head of cattle, it is Sorkin who takes over and negotiates with them. Aided by a half-breed Indian girl, Wahkshum, whose life Sorkin has saved, he makes a deal for 250 cattle, some pots and pans and trinkets.
