In this story a young man falls in love with a beautiful woman and waits day and night for her to respond to him in some way.

Michael and Gladys Herbert are a quiet, respectable, married couple who live in a large house with a garden somewhere in the English countryside. They are enjoying a game of Scrabble one Sunday afternoon with their friend, Colonel Eddie Phelps, and niece, Phyllis, when in walks the family cat carrying a pair of human fingers in its mouth.

This story revolves around the secret obsessions of a mature married couple, a husband and wife, neither of whom would admit to being in any way obsessed except by the possible loathing they feel for each other. He once loved and lost someone else and has never forgotten; she knows this and has never forgotten either.
