The year is 1932, and in a final attempt to save his failing restaurant, former con man Kurt Haijby appeals for a private audience with King Gustav V of Sweden. To his wife Anna’s great surprise, he is granted one.

When Kurt Haijby’s wife and restaurant co-owner discovers that he’s having an affair with the king, she seeks a divorce and refuses to speak to Kurt. It’s not long before Governor Nothin receives the information.

Haijby is thrown into a Gestapo prison for 18 months after being caught in a sexual act with a male prostitute. When he’s released in 1941, Nothin’s colleagues are waiting to collect him from the train in Stockholm.

In Kurt Haijby's dramatic 1950s trial, he stood accused of blackmailing the royal court, and many witnesses were called. This was his lawyer Henning Sjöström´s first case, and he then wrote a book about it.
