In this film, the fim makers travel in time from the spectacular Ethiopian highlands to the giant mountains of the Great Rift Valley. On their journey, they visit Africa's oldest peaks, the 80 million year old Atlas mountains in Morocco and the very newest- the Virungas- which still spout fire.

Filming in and through thorn thickets and grass, this film travels from woodlands to the open plains to explore the mystery of how and why the energy-rich world of the Savannahs was born so recently as well as the many ways in which animals and plants have capitalised on it.

This film explores how these deserts were created and the amazing ways in which animals and plants have evolved to cope with meagre and unpredictable rainfall, intense solar radiation, shortages of food and lack of shelter.

This programme takes us back in time to witness the birth of Africa and also carries us on a spectacular journey around the edge of the continent. Using breathtaking satellite imagery, aerials and stunning underwater photography we travel for 29,000 kilometres, alighting on shores so rich and varied in nature that it seems incredible they can all exist within the boundaries of a single continent.
