Michael and Gladys Herbert are a quiet, respectable, married couple who live in a large house with a garden somewhere in the English countryside. They are enjoying a game of Scrabble one Sunday afternoon with their friend, Colonel Eddie Phelps, and niece, Phyllis, when in walks the family cat carrying a pair of human fingers in its mouth.

He had been working at another area of the farm when he heard Susan's cries for help, but he could not dig fast enough to save his daughter.
