Clover (Zelda Harris) is a precocious ten-year-old African American girl living with her widowed father, Gaten (Ernie Hudson) on the family peach orchard in the Deep South. Shortly after remarrying, her father passes away leaving her in the sole custody of his new bride; a woman whom Clover barely knows.
