The Luangwa River winds through the savannahs of Zambia; A family of elephants journeys through the bush; A young calf struggles to master the art of using his unwieldy trunk.

In the Luangwa Valley, some of the largest animals on earth live side by side; Elephant, giraffe, buffalo, hippo and nile crocodile; They are the heavyweights.

Liuwa Plains is a place of extremes. For half the year, it's a dry barren plain where only the toughest survive and for the other half, it's a paradise of waterholes.

The Luangwa River belongs to the hippos. The world's largest concentrations of hippos are found here. They spend their days submerged, keeping cool in the hot sun.

Along the bank of the Luangwa River is a troop of eighty or so baboons. This is the story of a family, and a young male baboon who faces difficult choices as he comes of age.

A pride of lions roams the Luangwa Valley and encounters honey badgers, warthogs, hyenas and other fascinating animals.
