We, as humans, have fairly advanced senses, but there is a great deal we can learn from nature. This program looks at how evolution enhances our technology. Great ‘sensers’ include the seal, whose whiskers detect water turbulence after 30 seconds; elephants, who ‘hear’ through their feet over 2 km away; and bats, whose ability to echolocate has led to the design of a bike for blind people.

We have taken cues from nature’s most extreme examples. Huskies survive in the coldest places and avoid overheating. Based on their cooling methods, scientists developed the ‘Bear glove’. Copying a giraffe’s blood pressure regulation, Swiss scientists made a suit for fighter pilots. Crash helmets are improved by copying brain protection of woodpeckers.

Evolution is a race. A survival of the fittest. Nature has come up with incredible answers to our planet’s difficult questions. Animals’ exoskeletons inspire scientists to aid disabled people to walk. The cuttlefish’s camouflage has led to military tech. Owl wings help design quieter fan blades. We copy nature to advance ourselves.
