Monty Don's Adriatic Gardens

Exploring Venice by barge, Monty sees green spaces large and small, often hidden from view behind high walls. He is invited in to see wonderful gardens along the Grand Canal as well as a productive plot created on a disused rubbish dump behind one of the city's churches. He samples wine from Venice's vineyards and visits a restored public garden with a secret passageway to St. Mark's Square.

In Trieste, Monty visits a 150-year-old public garden that is being carefully restored. He then heads down the Croatian coast following the Venetians' trail, ending his journey on the beautiful island of Lopud. Along the way he views spectacular natural lakes and wildflowers, tours ancient olive groves, discovers a nursery with over 200 varieties of irises, and gains entry to a monastic garden.

On the Greek island of Corfu, Monty visits a fabulous garden made by an Englishman with Greek connections and travels into the mountains on a wildflower trail with the widow of the English writer Gerald Durrell. In Athens, Monty explores the Royal Gardens and a reforestation project on Mount Hymettus. His last stop is on the island of Hydra, where he works on a garden he helped create.
